シャレード (1963年) Charade (1963)

監督:スタンリー・ドーネン/Director: Stanley Donen
出演 オードリー・ヘプバーン、ケーリー・グラント/Starring: Audrey Hepburn‚ Cary Grant

やっぱりオードリー。 優雅なサスペンス

That’s Audrey. An elegant suspense.

Why is Charade the work that pushed aside Audrey’s masterpiece Roman Holiday? I have the feeling that this film was made for Audrey by one of the best new teams of the industry. Director Stanley Donen was 39 years old at the time. He was only 28 years old when he filmed his musical monument Singin’ in the Rain. Afterwards‚ apart from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers‚ his other good works with Audrey are Funny Face and Two for the Road. Even in Charade‚ there is plenty of his comical taste.
With Cary Grant‚ it is said that the success of Charade was because he co-starred. He is rich in experience‚ he cannot get over the trauma of losing his mother at 9 years old‚ his mysterious personal life and atmosphere about him‚ especially (and also in this film) playing men being pursued by women and not having any actor rival his popular role is excellent.
George Kennedy‚ Walter Matthau‚ James Coburn as supporting cast members really fatten this movie. The plot is about three shady characters appearing at the funeral of wealthy widow Gina’s (Audrey) late husband. Her husband was being hunted for $250‚000 worth of gold that he buried somewhere during the Second World War. Grant is at the beginning of the film‚ as a mysterious figure that appears on the ski slopes. Everywhere in the film is an elegant suspense.
Paid homage to in Francois Traffaut’s Shoot the Piano Player‚ let’s talk about the 2002 remake of Charade. The director is Johnathan Demme (The Silence of the Lambs)‚ Charles Aznavour‚ Anna Karina‚ Belgium female director Agnes Varda (Cleo from 7 to 5); all front line actors and directors of the chanson period and Nouvelle Vague made cameos.
The phoenix of the original‚ I would like to say is music director Henry Mancini. Moon River sung by Audrey in Breakfast at Tiffany’s and extremely sad Sunflower. Charade also became the prominent song of film music. Synonymous with the song is the caring and good-natured Audrey which is the friendship of longtime friends. Even in the instruction of the younger generation having passionately received honourary doctorates from numerous universities. Well it was this splendid lineup after all.
