プラダを着た悪魔(2006年) The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

監督:デヴィッド・フランケル/Director: David Frankel
出演 メリル・ストリープ、アン・ハサウェイ/Starring: Meryl Streep‚ Anne Hathaway

Streep pushes the boundaries

Protagonist Andrea (Anne Hathaway) becomes the junior assistant of Miranda (Meryl Streep)‚ the charismatic editor-in-chief of a top fashion magazine. The story unfolds surrounding the dark and light of this devilish editor-in-chief.
Streep played the role of Miranda when she was 57 years old. Firstly I think this fact in itself is amazing. The world of Hollywood‚ rather‚ the world of film is typically a male society. As to the limits of depth and roles for lead actresses as I mentioned in my review on Aliens‚ at the same time‚ lead actresses are supposed to be young and attractive. For men‚ winning an Oscar for Best Actor or Best Supporting Actor takes 12 and 15 years respectively from their debut. Compare that with women‚ taking a short 6 and 8 years. Soon after debuting in their twenties‚ or at the very least in their thirties‚ they win either the Oscar for Best Actress or Best Supporting Actress; and although there is a path for being a supporting actress‚ lead actresses find their suitable role after reaching middle age. Or‚ they find that their image is hard to change‚ and retire from the profession‚ as these numbers suggest.
Audrey Hepburn did her best work in the 1950s. Sophia Loren‚ Anne Bancroft and Shirley MacLaine wisely chose their roles beyond middle age‚ and maintained a great record in the golden age of the 1960s. Faye Dunaway‚ Diane Keaton in the 1970s; and later coming to the forefront was Streep‚ who has kept on the front line over 40 years. In Hollywood she is achieving something very difficult and extremely rare.
Of course there were generational changes. I’m sure she had her own favourable wind. However‚ no matter what is said‚ her ability to be nominated fourteen times for an Oscar‚ the work of an actress couldn’t have been done without the effort she gave. In addition‚ in the history of the Oscars is the achievement of Streep only. She is getting the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress prizes. The former in Kramer vs. Kramer‚ and the latter in Sophie’s Choice. Meryl Streep continues to evolve. How far will she push the boundaries? I think she really is a brilliant actress. Her next film is the 2012 planned release The Iron Lady. Obviously playing the role of the British prime minister‚ Margaret Thatcher. Now might not be the time to be just a devil.
